What does "Fighting the Frizzies at eleven" actually mean? Well, it an obscure reference to a pop culture item. Sort of. But let start at the beginning:
In 1977 a small, independent and insignificant movie called Star Wars opened to the public. And it become what we today call a blockbuster.
In 1978 TV execs thought they should take this idea and make something for the small screen. The Star Wars Holiday Special was born (don't ask, read for yourself in Wikipedia if you dare).
One of the oddest amusing moments connected with one particular broadcast of the Holiday Special was a bumper segment from WCBS-TV 2 in New York that said simply "Fighting the Frizzies... at eleven." The "Frizzies" were, of course, a truly 70s hair phenomenon coined for shampoo advertising: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP4H4jV1Spo
Funny thing is that this particular Fighting the Frizzies bumper was parodied on an episode of South Park in 1999 in a very obscure reference to the Star Wars Holiday Special during "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics". Only someone who had seen a copy of the Holiday Special from this particular broadcast could have possibly gotten the reference!
